What Is Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy is a dynamic profession with an established theoretical and scientific base and widespread clinical applications in the restoration, maintenance and promotion of optimal physical function.
As essential participants in the health care delivery system, physical therapists assume leadership roles in rehabilitation, in prevention, health maintenance and programs that promote health, wellness and fitness. Rehabilitation is concerned with the restoration of function and the prevention of disability following disease, injury or loss of a body part. The therapeutic properties of heat, cold, electric stimulation, ultrasound, cold laser, massage and exercise are used to improve circulation, strengthen muscles and encourage the return of motion and function. Their hands-on approach begins with an examination and is followed by a treatment program, which is specifically designed to assist the patient in restoring function. You will be instruct in how to take care for yourself by being taught the proper way to do exercises and how to use your body to gain strength and mobility and prevent recurring injury.
Most forms of physical therapy treatment are covered by your federal, state and private insurance plans, including Medicare, but the coverage may vary with each insurance plan.
